   Dear Mom,
   I have been working with our regiment to help bring the Confederate States back into the union. Mom, I hope that we can give the blacks the rights that they once had. General Lee surrendered at the battle of Appomattox courthouse. Thanks, mom for supporting me through the battles and the though times.

Dearest Auntie As I am sure you have heard, President Lincoln has freed the slaves in the rebelling states ! Isn’t it wonderful? Though I am fairly mad that the slaves in the border states have not been freed . But we don’t want the border states to rebell, so I guess it is for the best. The boys in my regiment have been putting on plays and making up games to pass the time . It has been most exciting to see what they have come up with, and I too have started to join in on the fun. And every night they play music and sing songs to lift their spirits . But I do wish we could see more action, than sit here in the mud. I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely Cathy
