!863 Blog Post- Word Art!  Based on the battle of Gettysburg

Evara Wigfall´s 1863 post

Dearest Auntie As I am sure you have heard, President Lincoln has freed the slaves in the rebelling states ! Isn’t it wonderful? Though I am fairly mad that the slaves in the border states have not been freed . But we don’t want the border states to rebell, so I guess it is for the best. The boys in my regiment have been putting on plays and making up games to pass the time . It has been most exciting to see what they have come up with, and I too have started to join in on the fun. And every night they play music and sing songs to lift their spirits . But I do wish we could see more action, than sit here in the mud. I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely Cathy

Dear mom,     I have been working hard fighting for our cause. True Believers have been working together. General McClellan has been overestimating the size of the Confederates so we are scared to make a move. But in the end, we have more people. We are getting tired of his mistakes and hope we will be appointed a new General.                                                                                                 Sincerely, ur son Harry Freeman.
Dear brothers, The union just won a massive bloody battle , were calling it Shiloh . It was horrid, there were soo many casualties and at the moment im on my break counting the bodies. The confederates landed a massive sneak attack costing us a lot of men . Assure Charles and Clare that I will be okay. sincerely, Clarence Parsons

Dearest Auntie All is well on the southern front, not a lot has been happening at my post and moral is very low at the moment. The other soldiers have started putting on little plays in their free time. Most of the story’s are quite interesting and a good way to pass the time. I have made many friends and have gotten to know my captain, Bruce Stanton. He is a fine man of military intelligence and leadership, he also figured out my identity but has sworn to keep my secret. I must be off for my friends are putting on another play. I hope to see you soon. Sincerely Cathy
1862 Blog Post Dear mother and father,  I have compiled a resource for you to use upon my return. These are the words we commonly use on during war. I have sent these to you in hopes of giving you a better understanding of life as a soldier. They will also be of aid to you when I return from war, so you know what I am talking about when I share stories. Please share these with the young boys in your neighborhood, as I have heard there has been much excitement and chatter amongst them about wanting to enlist. Yours truly,  Isaac J.          Dear mom, I joined the regiment of the true believers I am going to fight for the rights of slaves. Generall McClellan has been pushing us very hard on our drills. I have put in a lot of hard work for the Union army and I think I will pay off in the end.                                                                                              sincerely,                                                                                                             Harry Freeman

The Battle of Bull Run

Dearest Auntie The Battle of Bull Run happened only hours ago. But by the time this letter reaches you I am sure you have already heard all about the battle. I am pleased and saddened to tell you that I did not fight in the battle. I am glad to be alive and in one piece, but I am saddened that I could not fight for the union or defended my fallen comrades. I keep thinking that maybe if I was there I could have helped. I just hope the souls of the men lost today can find peace. Though I did hear the battle, for my regiment was only a few miles from where the battle took place. The smoke from the guns and cannons lifted so high into the air, it looked as if you could climb all the way to heaven and back. I love you dearly and will come back to you, four limbed and all. Sincerely Cathy

Letter home

Dearest Auntie, I know it’s only been a few weeks since I’ve left but I miss you so much. When I go to sleep I keep thinking I’ll wake up and see you, and be able cook and talk with you for hours. But I’ve been trying to set those feels aside. Ever since I’ve joined the Union army I’ve felt more and more alone. Every day brings new fears, excitements, and dangers in all forms. Recently people have been leaving my regiment claiming “they would rather be home with their wife’s and family’s” and I can understand that. The food here has gone bad and all I can think of is your special Potato Bacon Soup. I miss you so much. I’ll write to you again, that to you I promise. Yours truly Cathy.

Dear brothers, My essays and magazines seemed to be nothing, so I have decided to join the army. Slavery must be abolished, what the south is doing to the negros, our brothers is wrong and must be stopped. No need to be worried about me, for I know god will guide me on this dangerous journey. Take care of our parents, Charles and Clara, keep them company while I am away and assure then ill be okay. I love ya'll and wish ya'll the best in Manchester, Vermont. Sincerely, Clarence Parsons
Dear Constance , How are the children ? I hope you are well. There is no need to worry about me out on the field and I know you wish you could join me.   But you are doing everything you can, a volunteer nurse , and housewife . How is my father? William Stanton , I also know he would like to join me out here as much as you would, but please tell him not to worry. He needs to focus as much as he can on keeping the bank running. To help you, the kids, and the north . I miss you Constance and I will continue to fight for our brothers and for the opportunity to come  home  to my wife and kids alive. Every day we risk our lives and I fear I will never see you again . Tell the kids all is well, I pray to see you again once the war is fought. Love from,          Bruce Stanton
