1865 blog

Dear Mom,    I have been working with our regiment to help bring the Confederate States back into the union. Mom, I hope that we can give the blacks the rights that they once had. General Lee surrendered at the battle of Appomattox  courthouse. Thanks, mom for supporting me through the battles and the though times.
Dear family, The war is finally over, we can all go home. Our last deployment was Palmito Ranch , we chased those confederates till their last man. General Lee has surrendered to us , and gosh if only you could see the happiness and excitement engulfing us over here. But it is still not over, this country will take years to get along again, the confederates are apart of us now. May god bless this great Country. Sincerely Clarence Parsons.

The final letter home

Dear Constance Butler,  We regret to inform you that your husband, Captain Bruce Stanton has died, he was shot in the hip on the right side and while it was being amputated and he died due to blood loss and infection. We honor him in the darkest but best of times, his life contributed to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate army. His efforts in leading his regiment will never be forgotten. We wish you all the best in these dark times.                                        Sincerely,                                            General Ulysses S. Grant ↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↜↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞↞

The Last Letter. Evara Wigfall 1965

Dearest Auntie The Rebs have surrendered! General Lee surrendered to General Grant! But I’m sure you have known that for some time now. It is almost hard to believe the country is whole again and slavery in the south is no more. It warms my heart to know that everyone in America is free now. The boys are all so happy to be going home. They all say they’ve had enough of war, and I can’t agree more. I am overjoyed to be returning home to you and Uncle Michael, and I can’t wait to tell you about all the friends I’ve made and all the things I’ve learned while being here. I’ll be home soon and I can’t wait to see you. Sincerely, Cathy
Dear Mother and Father, The war has ended! I am coming home within a few days! The Union army has come out victorious; we have won the war. I am overjoyed. I thought the war would last a lifetime! After the battle at Appomattox Courthouse ended, General Grant went to meet with General Lee in order to come up with the Terms of Surrender. They said that 25, 000 rations were to be given to Confederate troops from the Union army, all Confederate weapons and flags were to be turned over, personal belongings of the Confederate army could be kept. Lastly, they said that soldiers from the Confederacy and the Union armies had to promise not to fight anymore. When both generals signed the agreement, cheers exploded from all men. We were filled with relief that the war was finally coming to an end. I am filled with joy that soon, I will be able to see you again. It has been so long; every day of the war, I longed to be with you and now that day is finally near! See you soon! Your son, Isaac J.

We marched from Atlanta all the way to Savannah.                                              Love,                                                      Harry Jakobsen

Dearest Auntie It is nice to hear from you, and to know that you are doing well. I apologize as I have not been writing to you lately. My regiment has been on the move constantly since General Grant took over the military . But it is to be expected. We’ve been moving through the states and will hopefully be in Virgina by days end tomorrow. I don’t know how the people down here can stand the heat in the summer, or all the bugs that live here either. I miss the house, I miss you, I miss uncle Michael and his stories of far away places and people. Hopefully this war will be over soon and I can return home. I love you dearly Sincerely Cathy
