Dear mom,

    I have been working hard fighting for our cause. True Believers have been working together. General McClellan has been overestimating the size of the Confederates so we are scared to make a move. But in the end, we have more people. We are getting tired of his mistakes and hope we will be appointed a new General.

Dearest Auntie As I am sure you have heard, President Lincoln has freed the slaves in the rebelling states ! Isn’t it wonderful? Though I am fairly mad that the slaves in the border states have not been freed . But we don’t want the border states to rebell, so I guess it is for the best. The boys in my regiment have been putting on plays and making up games to pass the time . It has been most exciting to see what they have come up with, and I too have started to join in on the fun. And every night they play music and sing songs to lift their spirits . But I do wish we could see more action, than sit here in the mud. I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely Cathy

Dear Constance Butler,  We regret to inform you that your husband, Captain Bruce Stanton has died, he was shot in the hip on the right side and while it was being amputated and he died due to blood loss and infection. We honor him in the darkest but best of times, his life contributed to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate army. His efforts in leading his regiment will never be forgotten.
