The Last Letter. Evara Wigfall 1965

Dearest Auntie

The Rebs have surrendered! General Lee surrendered to General Grant! But I’m
sure you have known that for some time now. It is almost hard to believe the
country is whole again and slavery in the south is no more. It warms my heart to
know that everyone in America is free now. The boys are all so happy to be going
home. They all say they’ve had enough of war, and I can’t agree more. I am
overjoyed to be returning home to you and Uncle Michael, and I can’t wait to tell
you about all the friends I’ve made and all the things I’ve learned while being
here. I’ll be home soon and I can’t wait to see you.

Sincerely,
Cathy
