Dear mother and father, 
I have compiled a resource for you to use upon my return. These are the words we commonly use on during war. I have sent these to you in hopes of giving you a better understanding of life as a soldier. They will also be of aid to you when I return from war, so you know what I am talking about when I share stories. Please share these with the young boys in your neighborhood, as I have heard there has been much excitement and chatter amongst them about wanting to enlist.

Dearest Auntie The Rebs have surrendered! General Lee surrendered to General Grant! But I’m sure you have known that for some time now. It is almost hard to believe the country is whole again and slavery in the south is no more. It warms my heart to know that everyone in America is free now. The boys are all so happy to be going home. They all say they’ve had enough of war, and I can’t agree more. I am overjoyed to be returning home to you and Uncle Michael, and I can’t wait to tell you about all the friends I’ve made and all the things I’ve learned while being here. Dearest Auntie As I am sure you have heard, President Lincoln has freed the slaves in the rebelling states ! Isn’t it wonderful? Though I am fairly mad that the slaves in the border states have not been freed . But we don’t want the border states to rebell, so I guess it is for the best. The boys in my regiment have been putting on plays and making up games to pass the time . It has been most exciting to see what they have come up with, and I too have started to join in on the fun. And every night they play music and sing songs to lift their spirits . But I do wish we could see more action, than sit here in the mud. I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely Cathy

Dear Mother and Father, The war has ended! I am coming home within a few days! The Union army has come out victorious; we have won the war. I am overjoyed. I thought the war would last a lifetime! After the battle at Appomattox Courthouse ended, General Grant went to meet with General Lee in order to come up with the Terms of Surrender. They said that 25, 000 rations were to be given to Confederate troops from the Union army, all Confederate weapons and flags were to be turned over, personal belongings of the Confederate army could be kept. Lastly, they said that soldiers from the Confederacy and the Union armies had to promise not to fight anymore. When both generals signed the agreement, cheers exploded from all men. We were filled with relief that the war was finally coming to an end. I am filled with joy that soon, I will be able to see you again. It has been so long; every day of the war, I longed to be with you and now that day is finally near! See you soon! Your son, Isaac J....
