Dear Charles and Clara,

The day is October 3, 1866 me and the men are cerebrating the new day of thanks. We just got word that president Lincon has issued a thanks giving proclamation. hopefully you all and my brothers are celebrating well. Also the president has issued a proclamation to free the slaves, hopefully yall have gotten word of it. Me and the men have been fighting and freeing slaves since January 1.

Dearest Auntie As I am sure you have heard, President Lincoln has freed the slaves in the rebelling states ! Isn’t it wonderful? Though I am fairly mad that the slaves in the border states have not been freed . But we don’t want the border states to rebell, so I guess it is for the best. The boys in my regiment have been putting on plays and making up games to pass the time . It has been most exciting to see what they have come up with, and I too have started to join in on the fun. And every night they play music and sing songs to lift their spirits . But I do wish we could see more action, than sit here in the mud. I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely Cathy

Dear Constance Butler,  We regret to inform you that your husband, Captain Bruce Stanton has died, he was shot in the hip on the right side and while it was being amputated and he died due to blood loss and infection. We honor him in the darkest but best of times, his life contributed to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and the Confederate army. His efforts in leading his regiment will never be forgotten.
