Dear family,

The war is finally over, we can all go home. Our last deployment was Palmito Ranch, we chased those confederates till their last man. General Lee has surrendered to us, and gosh if only you could see the happiness and excitement engulfing us over here. But it is still not over, this country will take years to get along again, the confederates are apart of us now. May god bless this great Country.

Dearest Auntie As I am sure you have heard, President Lincoln has freed the slaves in the rebelling states ! Isn’t it wonderful? Though I am fairly mad that the slaves in the border states have not been freed . But we don’t want the border states to rebell, so I guess it is for the best. The boys in my regiment have been putting on plays and making up games to pass the time . It has been most exciting to see what they have come up with, and I too have started to join in on the fun. And every night they play music and sing songs to lift their spirits . But I do wish we could see more action, than sit here in the mud. I hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely Cathy
